The city’s public school system, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, is the second largest in North Carolina. Southwest Charlotte has a variety of educational opportunities both public and private and continues to serve this growing area of Charlotte. Its newest school, the Ardrey Kell High School, opened its doors in 2006. As well, it is the home to new post-secondary opportunities including the Central Piedmont Community College's Southwest Campus located just off Arrowood Road. Other post-secondary institutions like Johnson & Wales University, Queens University of Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University can all also be found within Charlotte's city limits and easily accessible to residents in the South West Charlotte area..

Charlotte with it’s abundance of lakes is great for water activities. Among some of the lakes you will find Lake Norman, and lake Wylie with access to fishing, boating, hiking, and camping facilities. A popular recreational spot is Renaissance Park (1525 W. Tyvola Drive) and consists of biking trails, athletic fields, tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course. Because of the area's location, if you live here, you're not far away from McAlpine Creek Greenway, with its 8.9 miles of  cross country trails and nature trail, and other park areas including Park Road Park, McAlpine Creek Park, Col. Francis Beatty Park and Ray's Fetching Meadow with access to various outdoor facilities including tennis courts, basketball courts, playground equipment, baseball fields, biking and hiking trails and an 11-acre lake. For dog lovers, Ray’s Fetching Meadow is an off-leash dog park that was recently refurbished.
